Effects of Seed Storage Temperature on the Quality during Storage , Plant Growth and Bulb Development of Garlic (Allium sativum L.)

Abstract
This experiment was carried out to clarify the effect of storage temperature of seed garlic before planting on the quality, plant growth and bulb development in the field. By low(5) and room (20-15) storage temperature, sprouting and rooting were accelerated before winter season, while both were inhibited by high storage temperature (25-35). By storing seed garlics at low temperature not only percentage of secondary growth and bolting rate were increased, but the date of clove differentiation was also enhanced. Room temperature was more beneficial for the commercial yield than any other storage temperatures. When garlic was stored in a polyethylene film bag, more cloves were decayed during the storage, and more missing plants were counted in the field, compared to that stored in a net sack. The effect of low temperature treatment on garlic plant growth was enhanced in the northern ecotype Seosan than the southern ecotype Cheju and alternative temperature treatment was effective on the growth and bulb development of garlic than the room or high temperature treatment.
